As a five time survivor of the disease I know how lucky I am to have been born in a country were medicines and care were readily available. The children living in any of the 68 countries around the world with high child mortality rates are not so lucky. This is why the Global Coalition against Child Pneumonia has made today, November 2, 2009, World Pneumonia Day, a day to raise awareness about a disease that has been effectively treated for over a decade yet still kills four million people around the world each year just because they cannot afford or locate vaccines and medicines for prevention and treatment. It’s ridiculous. Let’s try and save some little lungs today and everyday.

The first human in space was Joe Kittenger, an American, a member of the United States Air Force and all around bad ass guy.

On Aug. 16, 1960 Joe took a fucking helium weather balloon 102,800 feet above the earth, well past our atmosphere into that dark, strange, poisonous space beyond. With his blood pooling into his right hand because of a hole in his pressure suit glove, he spent eleven minutes looking down at the Earth from the gondola of the balloon.

How did he get back to Earth you ask? He fucking jumped out of the gondola with a parachute on his back. Joe Kittenger, American pilot and all around bad ass guy, reentered the Earth’s atmosphere at 614 mph in nothing but a god damned pressure suit and is alive today to talk about it. Amazing.

I’m leavin’ on Sept 28th! So excited. I miss so many people and the weather and the fun things to do…but enough about that…here is an appropriate Maru video!

I can’t even decide which is better. Anyway I learned today that octopus  never leave their lairs after they lay their eggs. Most of them die there waiting for the babies to hatch and sometimes they will eat their own arms to stay alive long enough to protect the eggs. That’s some crazy awesome invertebrate love.
